Batching of Waterlox when finishing large projects.

When finishing larger projects such as floors, which are larger than 500 square feet, more than one can of finish is needed, since 1 gallon covers 500 square feet. When more than one can of our Waterlox Original Tung oil finishes is used for a coat, it’s always best to mix them together in a suitable container before starting the job. This is called “batching” and will eliminate going from one can to another and having possible gloss variations from room to room or half way across a floor. This is especially important when using our Waterlox Original Satin Finish.

Each can of Waterlox Original Satin Finish should be identical to the other; however, depending upon the mixing method used when opened; consistency of application thickness and technique; drying conditions (from day to day); floor surface preparation; and wood species the amount of finish needed should be mixed or blended together before beginning the job.

By doing this you ensure the pigment added to our Waterlox Original Satin Finish products (to reduce the gloss level/appearance) is thoroughly and consistently mixed. This practice is followed by most professional contractors regardless of the finish being used.

For example: A floor project area that is 1,000 square feet, will require one coat (2 gallons) of Waterlox Original Satin Finish applied over two to three coats (2 – 6 gallons) of Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish (each gallon covers 500 square feet per coat). Mix the 2 gallons together before starting the job. If more coats are being applied, only mix the gallons together being used for the coat you’re about to begin.

  • Mix the gallons together no matter what type of large project or number of different rooms being finished. (e.g.: hallways, kitchen leading to a dining room, etc.) Further, mix them even though there may be transitions between the rooms.
  • Our Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish and Waterlox Original High Gloss products do NOT need to be stirred or shaken or mixed prior to application.
  • When using Waterlox Original Satin Finish, mix the individual cans first and then batch the cans together before starting the job.
